The Late Shows 2024 – dates confirmed for NewcastleGateshead’s annual culture crawl

Friday 17 and Saturday 18 May 2024 sees the return of one of the biggest events in Newcastle and Gateshead's cultural calendars, The Late Shows, will take place across two nights in May 2024,

This year the event is sponsored for the first time by Creative Central NCL,, who will fund four new artist commissions for The Late Shows 2024.

Creative Central NCL is a five-year long project led by Newcastle City Council and funded by the North of Tyne Combined Authority. Now in its second year, the project aims to support independent artists and creative businesses in central Newcastle with investment, grants, skills development, and opportunities for growth.

Vikki Leaney, Project Manager for Creative Central NCL and Economic Development Officer at Newcastle City Council said:

“We’re really excited to partner with The Late Shows. Creative Central NCL is about finding new ways and new opportunities to make central Newcastle a vibrant and sustainable place for artists and creatives to forge their careers.

So, we’re pleased to announce that we’re funding four commissions to be part of The Late Shows next year. We’ll be looking for four venues based within the Creative Central NCL footprint and four artists to create something unique for the public to come and experience within those four venues. We encourage all venues in the Creative Central NCL footprint to take part.”

The Late Shows is an award-winning free late-night culture crawl – where museums, galleries, studio collectives and heritage venues come together to offer one-off events including activities, behind-the-scenes tours, performances and parties. The event is organised by Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums and usually features over 40 cultural venues staged across Newcastle and Gateshead.

The two-day event – now in its 16th year is a well-established part of the cultural calendar in the North East, and allows participants to sample the best of Newcastle and Gateshead's cultural offer in short taster visits.

Bill Griffiths, Head of Programmes & Collections at Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, and Project lead for The Late Shows said:

We are very happy to confirm the dates for the Late Shows in 2024 and we are looking forward to working with Creative Central NCL. The Late Shows are a must-see fixture in our region’s cultural calendar - with this new partnership we hope to see an increase in the number of brilliant cultural venues taking part to provide a weekend full of exciting activities and experiences after hours.”

The event will take place on Friday 17 May in the Ouseburn only and on Saturday 18 May it will be in venues across central Newcastle and Gateshead. The line-up of venues taking part will be announced in spring 2024.
